What do you look out for when buying a pre-owned SLR lens?
I plan on buying a lens for my Rebel Xti. Since I'm a hobby photographer, I think a pre-owned lens would suit me just fine. I'm just want to know what to check when I start shopping for one. How do I test it and what "defects" should I look out for?
Since you have a Digital Slr, you can check images right away. Check your owner's manual fro lens compatibility before you try to mount it. If it's okay, just mount it on your camera and bang out about 15-20 shots. Check the images in the LCD and see if they see right.
This is easier than trying to do an inspection of the lens, beyond looking for any obvious visual flaws. There used to be pins and stuff that you could push to check the smoothness of operation of the aperture blades, but that's all done electronically now.
See that everything looks straight, as in not bent. Inspect the coatings for scratches or scaly patches. Make sure nothing jams when you focus manually or zoom in and out, if it's a Zoom Lens. Make sure there is no hint of oil or other junk inside the lens, which you could see if you hold it up to a lamp with it NOT mounted on the camera.
If it's an "IS" lens, which I doubt, see if that works, too. Besides the obvious image stablization which can be seen in the viewfinder, you might hear a slight buzz when you depress the shutter half-way. This is normal.
