I want a semi-pro HD Video Camera for short films/art projects/cinematic practice, under £1000, which is best?
I have £1000 to spend on a video camera but have no idea what I'm really looking for! I'm thinking of going to study at film school, and want a gadget to mess around with on my gap year prior to it, to get a feel for moving image (previously quite seriously into still photography with SLR/DSLR cameras).
I want something with decent battery life, CF card or internal Hard Drive, with manual control on aperture/shutter speed/iso/focusing etc, but also great quality... most of the video cameras in stores are for basic home/family use, and I want something a bit more than that, but can't afford a proper industry camera... any ideas on which camera(s) might suit my needs best? Thanks in advance, for any replies!
"Semi-pro", to me, means a mic jack (typically 3.5mm stereo) and manual audio control. Many times, the manual controls are accessed through a menu - but not always.
"Pro", to me, means 60mm diameter lens or larger, 1/4" imaging chips or larger, XLR audio-in connectors and manual audio control. Manual Focus, zoom, aperture, and other manual controls are table stakes and are assumed. Commonly used manual controls are easily accessed from the outside of the camcorder.
There is no pro-grade or prosumer camcorder with an internal hard drive. Hard drive based camcorders have known issues with vibration, high altitude and data recovery issues in the event of a crash. If really needed, an external hard drive (see Focus Enhancements' FireStore series) that saves to DV/HDV format are available. There is no Pro Camcorder - or prosumer (other than a couple of Pannys I have seen no "pro" use) that records to AVCHD-MTS compressed files.
The closest I can get to your specifics in a proper camcorder is a consumer Canon HV40 - manual focus is a thumbwheel, not a focus ring. It has a 3.5mm stereo audio-in jack and manual audio controls - but small lenses and imaging chips. You *could* investigate the Nikon D90 - but only if you combine it with an audio field recorder like those from M-Audio, Zoom, Edirol and the like.
A "real" prosumer ("semi-pro") camcorder will be more along the lines of the Sony Hdr-FX1000... it is well outside your budget. The ONLY Flash Memory camcorders that would meet all your requirements - other than budget - are the Sony Hvr-Z7, Panasonic AG-HVX200 or JVC GY-HM100. The Sony HVR-A1 and HVR-HD1000 do not qualify because their lenses and imaging chips are consumer-grade sized. Most pro and prosumer camcorders record to DV/HDV format regardless of the storage media. The "affordable" units use miniDV tape.
If you are OK with standard deifnition, then the Canon GL2 meets many of the pro requirements and has been quite a work horse in the industry for many years - but has only a 3.5mm stereo audio-in jack (but can be adapted to XLR with an XLR adapter from juicedLink or BeachTek (among others). The Panasonic AG-DVX100b is worth mentioning - but outside your budget.
MiniDV tape means your computer needs a firewire port if you want to get the video into your computer for editing. USB won't work - USB-to-firewire cable/adapter/converter/hub things will not work.
Flash memory and hard disc drive camcorders use USB to copy the files, but additional steps for converting and archiving are required so the time you *think* you save just copying the video files gets used with these "extra" steps.
Consumer flash memory and hard disc drive camcorders compress the video files a LOT more than DV for Standard Definition and if High Definition, AVCHD/MTS compresses a LOT more than HDV.
As a photographer, you know what compression does to an image... and you know that compression = discorded data = reduced image quality. Same thing with video. The best images will come form the least compression - in the case of video, DV (standard definitoin) and HDV (high definition). Consumer DVD based camcorder should be avoided entirely (the standard definition VOB files are compressed the most).
There is no camcorder that comes with a "decent battery" in the box (except maybe flash memory units). It is suggested that an optional high capacity battery be purchased from the camcorder manufacturer.
