twin-Lens Reflex camera, Rollei type?
what are the advantages of using this kind of camera comparing to ordinary Digital Camera?
how do this cameras actually work?
is it worth getting one just for primary photography, not professional?
i have done some research but all these technical terms are quite hard to understand, full and simple explanation of this type of camera is needed!
thanx so much
With so much new and improved digital stuff, it's hard to say if there is much advantage left in using film or using a Twin Lens reflex. Back in the 1950's most 135 film cameras were rangefinder cameras, with a viewfinder that let you align images from two outlets to get a good focus. The negative was 24 X 36mm. Twin Lens Reflex cameras typically used 120 film, which produced a negative 60 X 60mm. The square format didn't matter so much, because "real photographers" did their own darkroom work and could crop to rectangular format when making enlargements. Assuming the same image sharpness on the negative, bigger is better, because the negative needs less enlargement to make your print, allowing a sharper print at a given size, or a bigger print at a given quality. The TLR had a lens for taking the picture, and an interlinked one above it of the same focal length that had a mirror behind it to reflect onto a Focusing Screen. There was often a magnifier to assist in focusing. Some models could be made with interchangeable Wide Angle, normal, or telephoto two-lens sets. In its day, the twin lens reflex was considered the better camera for carefully composed shots. The lighter, smaller 135 rangefinder was easier to carry and faster to use. Single lens reflex cameras were developed, mostly for 135, but also for 120 film. The 120 SLR's could be quite expensive. A single Lens Reflex Camera has a shutter in back which is like a curtain in front of the film. It's called a focal plane shutter. There is one lens, and behind it is a mirror that reflects the image to the focusing screen. When the picture is taken the mirror flips up out of the way, the focal plane shutter opens and closes, and the mirror flips back down. This setup is very versatile for using Interchangeable Lenses, since any compatible lens is it's own composing and focusing lens. There is no parallax error--the effect of a viewing lens being at a different location than the taking lens. Parallax is a problem at short distances. It is insignificant at longer distances. The 120 SLR had the disadvantage of increased weight, bulk and cost compared to the 135 SLR. The advantage was a bigger negative. Various models of 120 SLR could take negatives that were 45 X 60mm, 60 X 60mm, 60 X 70mm, and 60 X 90mm. Notice that there is always one dimension of 60 mm. To make a camera that shoots 60 X 90mm is harder than 45 X 60mm, because of the lens that has to cover that amount of film area with good sharpness. Among the professionals, the 120 SLR was becoming the gold standard, but the 120 TLR was not quite dead. All that apparatus of a mirror flipping up (temporarily blacking out the screen) and flopping down added noise and vibration, which is more pronounced in the bigger 120 camera than the smaller 135 SLR. The 120 TLR with it's little lens shutter is simpler and quieter.
The 120 TLR Film Camera may not have much future due to competition from Digital Cameras. No one seems interested in making a digital TLR. Some of the 120 SLR's are getting a new lease on life, with models that have interchangeable film or digital sensor backs. Those cameras are VERY expensive. A few situations where film still has an edge are very long, low light exposures (where digital gets noisy), and scenes with electronic displays in them (where digital often shows moire effects).
