Does charging a lithium-Ion Battery after it is fully depleted shorten the life?
I read an article that said charging a battery after it is fully depleted will shorten the life. It said to charge batteries when there is still a little bit of energy in it. Is this true and what is the best way to charge lithium-ion batteries??
In the old days (and I DO mean old!) NiCd batteries were subject to voltage 'memory'. You're going back to the late 1970's for that kind of technology. In any case, sometimes a battery with power still in it needed to be run completely out in order to 'erase' the memory and fully recharge it. Even then, there was still some energy left in the battery. So some chargers were designed to completely discharge the battery before charging it. Not really a good thing to do to any battery.
Now, NiCd's have gone the way of the wooly mammoth. No such thing as voltage, or charge, 'memory' anymore. And, so, no reason to fully discharge a battery before recharging it.
Still, if you use your lithium-ion battery until your device no longer operates, relax. You haven't fully discharged it. It still has energy left in it, just not enough to do your device any good. So it doesn't hurt a thing to go that far before recharging it.
In other words, run it until it dies, and recharge it. Or recharge it even when only partly used. Either way, you'll be doing no harm to your battery.
And the people who caution about a limited number of recharge cycles in a battery's life are erroneously referring to an AVERAGE which is based upon common usage, not limits of the technology.
