Canon Eos 7D Overview
With the introduction of the Canon EOS 7D, Canon brings performance and versatility to amateurs, serious photographers and semi-professionals alike. It is undoubtedly a very impressive piece of kit.
The Canon EOS 7D features:
- 18 Megapixel APS-C CMOS sensor.
- 8 frames per second shooting at full 18MP resolution.
- ISO speeds up to 6400 expandable to 12800.
- 100% coverage viewfinder with 1.0x magnification.
- A newly designed AF sensor with 19 cross-type AF points.
- A new 63-zone dual layer iFCL metering system.
- Dual "DIGIC 4".
- Full HD 1080 movie recording.
- Integrated Speedlite Transmitter and a built-in 15mm Wide Angle flash.
- 3.0" Clear View II LCD featuring 920,000 dot resolution.
- Weather sealing Magnesium alloy body with environmental protection.
Take a look in the box and you'll typically find the EOS 7D Body, Eyecup, Camera Cover, Wide Strap EW, Battery Charger, Power Cable, Battery Pack, Stereo AV Cable and Interface Cable. Several kits are available that include various lenses starting with 18-135mm lens kits.
There are several things that stand out with the Canon EOS 7D:
- With batteries inserted and lens attached, the solidness of the unit is typical Canon high quality.
- The Intelligent viewfinder offers a wide range of shooting information including AF information, exposure information, flash information and composition information. The composition information includes a grid and dual axis electronic level (spirit level) that can be superimposed to help you, for example, keep horizons level.
- The menu system has everything you need to shoot, playback and setup your Canon EOS 7D.
- The video mode is better than many camcorders.
- Low light performance shows very little visible noise.
Using pre-set program settings the Canon EOS 7D will do everything you ask of it. Switch to manual and there is a high degree of customisation available. In addition, custom dial options let you store your own settings which is great for when you've found a combination of settings that suit your photography style in certain situations, such as action shots.
To assist your creativity, the Canon EOS 7D provides:
- 19 cross-type AF points.
- AF Modes: AI Focus, One Shot, AI Servo.
- AF Point Selection: 19 point AF, Single point AF, Spot AF, AF point Expansion, Zone AF.
- TTL full aperture metering with 63 zone Dual Layer SPC.
- ISO Sensitivity Auto (100-3200), 100-6400 (in 1/3-stop or whole stop increments), ISO can be expanded to H: 12800.
- White Balance Settings: AWB, Daylight, Shade, Cloudy, Tungsten, White Fluorescent light, Flash, Custom, Colour Temperature Setting.
- Viewfinder Information: AF, Exposure, Flash, Image, Composition.
- Brightness Adjustment: Auto (using extenal amibent light sensor), Manual (adjustable to one of seven levels).
- Flash Modes: Auto, Manual flash, Multi flash, Integrated Speedlite Transmitter.
- Shooting Modes: Auto (Stills and Movie), Creative Auto, Program AE, Shutter priority AE, Aperture priority AE, Manual (Stills and Movie), Custom (x3).
- Drive Modes: Single, Continuous L, Continuous H, Self Timer (2s+remote, 10s +remote)
- Continuous Shooting: Max. Approx. 8fps. (speed maintained for up to 126 images (JPEG) (with UDMA card), 15 images (RAW))
