How does patenting a monkey shaped camera bag make the world a better place?
I just stumbled upon this patent on a monkey shaped camera bag: http://www.google.com/patents?id=NZcSAAAAEBAJ&dq=monkey+shaped+camera+bag.
Society spends resources administrating patents expecting more innovation in return I suppose. But in what way does a monkey shaped camera bag represent innovation useful to society!? Seriously. What is the explanation.
You appear to have several misconceptions about patent law.
First, the link you posted is to a design patent -- as opposed to a utility patent. Design patents are directed to ornamental features of a functional item. Design patents have a VERY limited scope.
Second, "society" does not spend resources administrating patents. Acquiring patents is expensive and the fees are substantial. The Patent Office is huge profit center for the government. If a private individual or corporation wants to spend to spend money on what you consider to be a useless patent, then shouldn't they have the ability to do so?
Third, there is absolutely NO legal requirement that a patent "make the world a better place." You're simply throwing a straw man to artificially enhance your argument.
