Triathlon bikes - aero bar advice needed?
I have just purchased a set of aero bars for my road bike. Can anyone give me any advice on how to adapt to these easily. Or is it just a case of get out and ride and use them whenever I can?
More importantly any advice on the best tactics for gear selection while using the aero bars? ie are you best to build up to speed and then go onto the aero bars, or get on them as soon as possible and keep reaching across?
Yes, it takes some training. The first ride or two you will feel it in your glutes. but you will also feel like you've ignited an afterburner.
You may be able to lift your saddle a bit and move it forward a tad, but don't exxagerate. This allows you to use more of your glutes and hamstrings.
I was taught to hold on to them, sort of pulling from underneath, until I feel an "arch" of muscle power from my glutes over my whole back towards my arms. This is tiring but it does give you added power. You can use this to get over a roller or so.
Shifting strategy - it's a mix. I'm gessing from "reach over" that you kept the drop bars (so did I). So I accelerate quite a bit before I settle into the bars, and then try to only shift occasionally.
